Research Projects

Orange City Council has undertaken a series of research studies over the past 18 months including tourism, cluster, skills and food entrepreneur development. Collaboration, supply chain networks, capacity building, learning and their relationship to building effective regional business results are central to the outcomes of each of the research projects.

The Council, in partnership with Cabonne and Blayney, is currently developing an integrated strategic action plan that will reflect these underlying principles and build upon the outcomes to date.

Orange, Cabonne and Blayney Skills Development Project 2003
Recognising the impact skill shortages are having on our region, Orange, Cabonne and Blayney Councils secured funding to develop an Industry and Skills Growth Strategy for the region. The project focused on the mining engineering cluster as a pilot, and aimed to develop a model upon which strategies for other industry clusters could be developed. The final report is now available.

The Councils are currently seeking funding to appoint a Partnerships Project Manager to facilitate the development of an industry network as recommended in the final report. The principal task of the project manager will be to empower and build capacity within the local engineering and trade related industry to address skills requirements.

Tourism Product Development Project 2003

Recognising the need to more effectively use the limited resources available to promote and develop tourism, in partnership with Central NSW, Orange City Council undertook research to identify market segments that currently visit and those that are most likely to visit the region.

Based on this research, a tourism business prospectus was developed for Orange that identifies product gaps in the market and opportunities to reinvigorate existing and/or develop new product to better meet the target market’s demand and expectations.

Together the research programs have provided the opportunity to more effectively target marketing campaigns and product development to get the best outcome for the community and private sector expenditure. A copy of the prospectus is now available.

Industry Cluster Research Project 2002

Orange, Cabonne and Blayney Councils have commissioned research to identify those industry clusters that are driving our region; The Industry Report. From these findings, the Councils have developed a greater understanding of the capacity of local industry and the potential for our industrial base to become more internationally competitive. This research also assists investors to make better business decisions.

Food Entrepreneur Development Project 2003

This project was an initiative of Orange and Cabonne Councils following feedback from the agri-food industry as to the increasing difficulty in complying with food standards and legislation. The primary goal of the project was the development of food entrepreneurs, their skills and enterprises enabling people to turn good food ideas into viable food product. A copy of the report is now available.
